JOB TITLE: Intern—Urban Medical Year

DEPARTMENT: Clinical Support

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The urban medical year intern works full-time, primarily alongside providers recording patient encounters in the electronic health record and facilitating patient flow by documenting patient encounters, but also completing an 11-month medical advancement curriculum. Interns spend 6-9 shifts/week alongside providers, and 1-2 shifts/week doing medical advancement (shift=4hrs).

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  1. Accompany provider into patient exam room to transcribe history and physical exam

  2. According to provider, list accurate symptoms, diagnoses, plans, and follow-up instructions

  3. Recognize elements of physical exam and record details appropriately

  4. According to provider, list accurate orders for labs, imaging, and prescriptions

  5. Document procedures performed by the provider

  6. According to provider, properly document CPT/ICD codes necessary for billing/coding

  7. Help maintain patient flow by matching pace of provider

  8. Follow templates and progress note structure specific to provider

  9. Follow billing/coding guidelines and respond promptly to claims editing requests

  10. Seek clarity from provider when medical record appears to have ambiguity or discrepancy

  11. Review and proofread documentation before finalizing

  12. May perform other duties as required

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Education: Concurrent undergraduate enrollment; prefer completed bachelor’s degree

 

Experience: English fluency; typing performance >50wpm and accuracy>95%; prefer 6mos outpatient clinic experience OR 3mos unpaid training (ie, unpaid internship); prefer 6mos experience with eClinicalWorks OR 3mos unpaid training (ie, unpaid internship)

 

Licenses or Certifications: medical terminology certificate OR equivalent during training (refundable deposit)

Level 1 – Requires some concentration and normal attention. Generally, once the job is learned, the tasks can be performed more or less automatically.

 

Level 2 – Requires high periods of concentration intermittently and normal attention. Generally, even once the job is learned, tasks will require normal attention to deal with recurring variables.
